James Adderley looks at weekend softball

Story Picture
“Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re right on time for this serving of Sports Monday. Lady Rebels consolidated its grip on first place in the Rogers Stadium softball season by sweeping a pair of ballgames from a struggling JL’s team.

We pick up the action in the top of the 2nd inning with Delvorine Mena of JL’s getting hit hard by Rebels shortstop Robinson for a stand up double.

The next batter, Baptist gets thrown out at first but the attempt to prevent Robinson from stealing 3rd allows the 1st run of the ballgame to score.

In the bottom of the 4th this pitcher from Banner to the opposing pitcher Mena gets away from the catcher Jones as Dorla Cattouse scores to tie the ballgame at one a piece.

On the very next pitch Mena tags Banner to bring in Joyce Galvez for the 2-1 JL’s lead. In the 5th first baseman Anderson smashes this pitch with 2 on, one run scores and she steals second safely.

Meanwhile, this weak stroke from Westby is enough to bring home one run, we thought we saw a double play opportunity but there’s only 1 out. Then Smith steps up and pushes this single up the middle of the pitch for the RBI and the Lady Rebels go on to post the 5-2 victory in game one to stay atop the leader board. Game two brought a cruel 12-2 rout giving the two game sweep to Sherlene Banner and Lady Rebels.

Turning to the male game on the ticket here’s Patrick Henry of G.A. Roe & Sons getting tagged hard for a long single, which gives up the RBI.

In this half of the inning G.A. Roe get to Charles Solis of Dantos with this low cruise smash that gets the runner home. Now watch the runner from 3rd score on this misplay by the catcher as G.A. Roe jumps on the lead. But Dantos come right back with this smash to right field that holds allowing the runner from second to score easily.

It’s more frustrating for G.A. Roe pitcher Patrick Henry when he becomes victim to another run scoring pass ball. Speaking of four traction, bases are juiced by Dantos when this routine throw in the plate goes astray allowing two runs to score and the picture on your screen tells that story.

Two more runs score off this hit to the outfield as G.A. Roe zooms to the lead again. However, Dantos comes back here–Patrick Henry is touched for the long ball. Then he gives up the single up the middle for a RBI.

It’s more Dantos with this long punch for another run. Talk about giving up hits, the next batter takes Henry deep…Dantos goes on the to post the 9-8 big win.

In baseball news, Belize’s participation in the CARICOM Junior Basketball Championship has produced two straight wins for our U-17 team at Georgetown, Guyana. They beat the Cayman Islands 61-36 and then took out Barbados 68-58. On Tuesday Belize faces Bahamas and on Thursday will tackle Suriname.

Checking the results from opening schedule in the Inter-District Basketball competition shows that Cayo had to go triple overtime down South to beat P.G. 114-112 and Orange Walk Music Center beat Ministry of Works at Sugar City 78-58.

Jah, over all, I’m James Adderley.”
