Buses Back to 100 Percent Capacity, Minimum Wage to Gradually Increase

In Cabinet news this week, the Minister of Labor and Local will review of the Labour Act, including new pandemic regulations. The ministry will also plan for the gradual implementation of a five-dollar minimum wage. The Ministry of Agriculture will look at the rising cost of living and introduce legislation at the next sitting of the House of Representatives for legal mechanisms to prosecute merchants and shop owners engaged in price gouging. The Prime Minister and Ministerial Consultative Team convened the first meeting with the Social Partnership Committee to review government’s performance for the past six months. The Minister of Health reported that in conjunction with the Ministry of Education forty-five Belizeans were awarded scholarships to study nursing at the University of Belize.  Cabinet mandated that effective Thursday, November twenty-fifth 2021, all buses can return to carrying one hundred percent seating capacity, but must continue to follow all COVID-19 regulations and enforce passenger mask wearing. Finally, legislation will be reintroduced for Belize to become a party to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora to address the illegal trade of endangered species and honor international commitments.
