Recruit 95 Issues Hampers to Needy Persons in the City

Forty-three recruits from squad ninety-five of the Belize Police Department were out today giving back to the community. It is a project that the recruits from Belize City precincts one and two and Hattieville formation are engaged in to assist those who are most needy. The recruits for some time now have been assigned to various jurisdictions to get a hands-on feel of the job. But outside of the mandated law-enforcement duties, community policing is an active part of the department. They decided that before they return to the Police Training Academy in Belmopan, they would carry out this hamper drive. News Five spoke today to Sergeant Timmons and recruit McDonald about the initiative.

“With this squad project, we took the form of a food hamper drive to give back to the community. We know that COVID is here and in this time, a lot of people are struggling. So we took the opportunity to do the little that we could to reach out and help. Last minute, we ended up with a bag of groceries so it was five in all. Five baskets were prepared and from the onset of the idea, I informed the recruits that lie how you are out there patrolling, bring in names of needy people. The selection was done from the recruits, from members of the police department, members of the community. Sadly, it was only five. We wish we could have done more because a lot of times we are out there and we see people in need; we see that ends are not meeting. So at the end of the day when we are out there, heart goes out to those people out there.”

“It gives that interaction between the Belize Police Department and the community in order to help find ways to deter crime – not only deal with investigation and so forth, but also partnering with them in terms of community watch and having that safe zone with the Belizean public in order to gain back the confidence from the Belizean people.”
