Kareem Michael to Head Central Bank
Kareem Michael has been named the new Governor of the Central Bank of Belize. Michael has been acting as Governor ever since the former Governor, Gustavo Manuel Vasquez resigned suddenly in August, after only nineteen weeks in that capacity. Today, Prime Minister John Briceno told the media that the Board of Governors of the Bank recommended that Michael be appointed and he agreed.

“We’ve been in discussions with Mr. Kareem Michael. We have looked high and low…he knows the bank very well. He also knows the…the best way to move the country forward is for…moving in the same direction. He’s a young man but brilliant…some of my colleagues are concerned because they think he comes from a UDP family but so what…he meets all of those qualifications.”
Michael has served at the Central Bank as Deputy Governor, and in the Research, Financial Supervision, and Compliance Departments of the Bank.
