James Adderley has weekend cycling results

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re into another serving of Sports Monday. After 3 misses in a row beginning with the Mother’s Day Bel-Chi Classic, the Belize Amateur Cycling Association finally got back on track with yesterday’s successful running of the Orange Walk Cycle Classic.

20 riders suited up for this one but heading into the finish line it is only the 2 break away riders: Robert Mariano of Bel-Chi and Douglas Lamb of Santino’s. It’s Douglas Lamb initiating the sprint, but Mariano turns up the revolutions in a streak to the tape that gives him his first big “W” since his return to cycling. Lamb of course has to settle for 2nd.

In the sprint for 3rd place, it’s Ernest Meighan pulling the trigger successfully. Ray Cattouse sets chase and he has to settle for 4th, Mateo Cruz pulls 5th, Andrew Smiling 6th, Francisco “the Animal” Flores 7th, while Shane Vasquez rounds out the top 8. Robert Mariano was certainly elated about his first big “W” in a long time as he enjoys this moment with the fans. We caught up with him this morning.

Robert Mariano, Winner

“Early in the race we just gone and take off, me and Nigel. About 18 miles after that Raymond Cattouse, “Animal,” Zelaya and other guys came across and we ran until Jawmeighan came across and then we went to Orange Walk, came out of Orange Walk. The pack started to break up; the breeze started to blow when coming down to town. Around Sandhill Andrew Smiling came across and the race went dead. A little break happened. At one time I got let go then I got back. We caught “Animal” and Raymond Cattouse; we caught them at Ladyville and that is how I got back. I said that I would drop a little attack on them.”

Q: “Tell us about the sprint. To me it appeared that Douglas Lamb initiated the sprint.”

Robert Mariano

“I don’t know because they could have let go of me out there because I am not in shape. I was just riding with brains and heart. I said that once I came to town he would not win the sprint. So he said he would try to start the sprint. So he started and tried but he can’t sprint, so I didn’t worry about that.”

Q: “How important is this win for you?”

Robert Mariano

“It really boosts me up and thing so that I can get focussed on the bike more.”

In basketball news, Orange Walk’s Junior Champion emerged Friday night at the People’s Stadium when No Limits Soldiers won the pivotal Game III against M & A Juniors with a 37-33 final score. Congratulations are in order.

We also wanna remind you fans that the under 17 national basketball team of Belize is in training for the CARICOM Junior Basketball Championship under Fred Gabourel. They will be playing later this month.

In football news our national under 23 readies itself for 2 outings against Guatemala. I think it comes up in September. At stake is a bid to the 2000 Olympics and certainly we wanna make the best out of this opportunity. Support your very own Belize.

That’s it. We wanna thank our cameramen for their great work. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
