ARS/BIS “Disappointed” By Sugar Cane Farmers Statement
The impasse between the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association and the Belize Sugar Industries Ltd continues to intensify. On Thursday, BSI issued a release saying it, “views with great concern the latest release… issued by the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association.” In the release BSI questioned whether BSCFA is demonstrating good faith by its “rapidly rejection” of BSI offer to discuss a proposal based on the Association’s, “concept for reforming the value share formula for payment.” The release went on to note that BSI is disappointed the Association, “does not seem interested in solving the commercial agreement impasse but prefers instead to sign an interim agreement.” BSI says it views this as kicking the can down the road once again, eroding the much needed confidence to move the industry forward. BSI, in its release, also appears to be unhappy that the Association has “sought to involve the government in this private commercial matter.” BSI maintained that its willingness to consider a revised cane payment structure is grounded on the principle that the agreement would be mutually beneficial. We will continue to follow.
