Should ComPol Chester Williams be Subject to Inquiry?

Kareem Musa

But was the outlaw culture within the police department, which was allowed to thrive, a reflection of Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams and should he too be subject to an inquiry? This question was raised the press today.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs

“One has to admit that this particular unit of the department was doing a lot of busts. So while it is that there appears to be some other mischief that they were up to, they did have a lot of free rein – as I think you are trying to insinuate – they did have a lot of free rein because of the type of operations that they were engaged in. Regretfully, they have taken advantage of that free rein in my opinion and allegedly and so we’ll just have to wait to see the outcome of the trial. But I can see where you are going with that argument. It does come down to a matter of trust, but at the same time, you cannot expect one man, the Commissioner of Police, to micromanage two thousand two hundred police officers. At some point, you have to delegate and in this instance, that delegation is ACP Vidal. And so there may have been, like I said, administrative failures by him, by ACP Vidal, but I don’t think that falls on the commissioner to know at any given point in time, he has to know where two thousand two hundred police officers are. There is a hierarchy and a rank and those officers have responsibilities and obligations themselves.”
