Back to Chetumal! New Year’s Gift to Belize as Borders Reopen January 1st
On Tuesday, Cabinet approved the reopening of land borders, effective January first, 2022. The announcement was made by way of a Cabinet brief issued this afternoon. The brief noted that health conditions to such travel will be published at a later time, so it is not clear if this will include testing requirements. Additionally, the Cabinet brief highlighted that more than three hundred and sixty thousand vaccines are available in country, while a total of two hundred and ten thousand persons, or forty eight percent of Belizeans, have received at least one dose of the vaccine. Forty-five point nine percent of the population or close to one hundred and ninety-eight thousand persons have been fully vaccinated. With the possible detection of the Omicron variant in Belize, the Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat informed Cabinet that five new ventilators and patient monitors will be donated to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
