PM on Border Reopening

John Briceño

Back in mid October, Prime Minister John Briceño appeared on Channel Five’s Open Your Eyes, telling the hosts that if the COVID-19 numbers continued on a downward trend, the curfew hours would be pushed back. But more importantly for many waiting to go back to Mexico and Guatemala, the land borders might be re-opening in January. This week’s Cabinet announced that they would in fact open January first, showing those projections were on target.

“By the end of the year, then we expect then to open the borders, the land borders, for people that are fully vaccinated. But we know that once you go across for more than seventy-two hours, then you would have to take a rapid test for when you’re coming back, as per what is being done.”

“This is interesting, but of course as you’re saying, I hear very clearly this is based on the positivity rate.”

John Briceño

“Based on the positivity rate that it’s going down.”

Marleni Cuellar

“That if we get 10 percent by the end of this month, five percent at the end of the year.”

John Briceño

“Yes. Those are the projections from the Ministry of Health.”
