New requirements for gun licenses
In the light of many discrepancies in the gun license policy or lack thereof in Belize, the Ministry of National Security and Immigration has formulated a new battle plan against illegal and unlicensed guns in Belize. In addition to a four week waiting period and license fees, all those interested in obtaining a gun license must attend a training session in the handling of firearms and pass a theory and practical test. Just like your driver’s license, your gun license must be on your person at all times and will expire on your birthday, to be renewed subject to approval. Should you be found under the influence of alcohol or drugs, especially at a public function, a criminal offence is being created. Each applicant must also supply samples of test-fired bullets, cartridges and casings as a way of linking a gun to its owner. The Ministry hopes this new system will play a key role in police investigations. The new gun license policy comes into effect on July 19th, 1999.
