Crafts displayed at St. John’s and Stella Maris

An arts and craft exhibition was held this week at the Bishop Sylvester Memorial Center to mark the end of St. John’s Cathedral Week. Primary school students showed off their arts and crafts which were exhibited last month in the Festival of Arts. According to St. John’s Lower School Principal, Joy Ross, several other Anglican schools got a chance to take part in the show.

“The five schools that are affiliated with the church, which is St. John’s Cathedral, were asked to mount an exhibition and it was mounted on the 21st.”

“Well basically what I did was to cut up a magazine and cut it up and make a map of Belize and put glue around it and just put the magazine in it.”

“Well we had to find something that you don’t usually find in a bottle so what I thought of was a bear. So I drew him, colored him and put him in a background.”

With the end of the exhibition today, the children are looking forward to their summer vacation.

Although many children didn’t get out for the summer until today, the students of Stella Maris got a head start on their summer camp activities earlier this week. Today the results of their efforts were put on display.

This week the Youth Department offered the students of Stella Maris School a chance to develop their creative skills. According to their instructor, Icilda Humes, the children were allowed to work at their own level.

“Well we have been doing arts and crafts training here for the past three days; we started on Wednesday. The students were divided into three different skill levels. They have been doing crafts such as making trinket boxes out of paletas sticks. They have been doing picture frames and other arts and crafts at their skill level, what they are capable of making.”

As a reward for their work the children got to watch their favorite television show and go on a trip to Altun Ha. Arreini Palacio for New Five.

The Youth Department will also be having summer camps in Port Loyola and Crooked Tree. Parents and children interested in finding out about these camps can contact the department’s offices at number 16 Gabourel Lane.
