Parenting course holds graduation
As anyone who has children knows, it’s not easy to be a parent. But sometimes things get so out of hand the children are removed from the home. The Department of Human Development feels it is important to reunite families and to help this occur they offer a course for those whose children are in government custodial care or foster homes. Today there was a graduation for those who stuck it out to the end, attending classes on everything from drug abuse to self esteem.
Lorna Wade, Graduate
“I want my children to look up to a mother that cares and loves, not a mother that is on the street smoking and drinking. That’s why I came and took the course. I know that I have a problem and I need help and I, on a whole, think that the program is good and it relates to everyday life and what Belizean women go through.”
Brenda Stuart, Coordinator, Human Development Department
“That’s why most of the parents are so anxious to have this training under their belt so as to help them get their children back. Also when we go to court, most of these parents are court ordered to attend these parenting classes so as a part of helping them get back on their feet and helping them to get their children back.”
Six women were awarded Certificates of Achievement. The course was conducted by the Family Services Division of the Ministry of Human Development and held at their offices on King Street.
