NOPCA says don’t leave kids alone this summer
Despite the rainy days we have been having recently, it is officially summertime for the children and primary schools are closing doors for the long vacation. The National Organization for the Prevention of Child Abuse today offered a few reminders for parents who may find it hard to find adequate supervision for their children. NOPCA says although it may be hard to juggle work and children, never ever leave young children alone, even for short periods of time. No one under sixteen should be left alone at night. Children under the age of thirteen are not mature enough to deal with an emergency and should not be left alone for any extended period. It is not fair to expect older children to be responsible for smaller ones. If you must leave the house, leave clear instructions of what to do in the event of problems and a list of people your children can trust along with phone numbers. Put all dangerous substances, especially matches and cleaning products out of the reach of children. When choosing a babysitter, follow your instincts and go with your gut feelings. If you doubt anyone, for any reason do not place your children in their care. It is never worth putting your child’s safety or emotional well being at risk.
