Belize City Mayor Reflects on 2021

As 2021 is coming to an end, many have taken this time to reflect on what happened over the course of the past year. There are those who lost their loved ones to COVID-19 and then there are those whose incomes were slashed, or in some cases totally ripped away when the pandemic hit. The Belize City Council has survived yet another COVID-19 year and today, Mayor Bernard Wagner reflected on what the year has been like for CitCo.

“We have been with it for two years straight. It has taught us lessons throughout the last two years; it has taught us as human beings, it compels us to change our lifestyles, change how we eat, change how we interact with people; we have to ensure that we exercise. We have to continue the messaging of vaccination. The council – we have really, really performed well. I still believe that any other administration would have failed and we did fail. Certainly we had some issues with the garbage collection – that is behind us.  We are looking forward to 2022 where we are still owed out there. People complain about streets not being fixed or streets in deplorable condition, but listen, the residents owe the city council twenty-one million [dollars]. And if we would get those funds in, we would be able to carry out and work the streets and really put in some infrastructure. But we understand that we have to really become innovative to ensure that we begin to deal with infrastructure for 2022.”
