Two dead as a result of machete attacks
Four separate chopping incidents over the weekend have left two dead and two in critical condition. Around 8 on Friday night, officers of the Belize City C.I.B. Unit went to the scene on Reggae Street, in the Port Loyola area, where they saw 35-year old Ivan Swazo suffering from stab wounds to his back. It is alleged that Swazo’s stepson, Alvin Coleman, also known as “Father,” attacked his stepfather after an argument. Coleman will be charged as soon as he is found.
Independence police reported that on Friday evening, they visited Bella Vista Village on the Southern Highway where they saw the lifeless body of 63 year old Fernando Gomez Aborca. Investigations revealed that Aborca was lighting his fire hearth when Moises Velasquez allegedly picked up a machete and without provocation, chopped Aborca eleven times. Neighbors, hearing the screams, went to the scene where they claimed to have seen Velasquez riding away on his bicycle. Velasquez has since been charged with murder and is in the custody of Independence police.
A misunderstanding in Louisville, Corozal on Saturday night left 21 year old Martin Gongora dead. According to Police, a 16 year old who reportedly had an argument with Gongora earlier on Saturday, approached him later that night and chopped him on the neck. The youth was detained pending charges.
At around ten o’clock Saturday night police were called to number six Sylvester Street in Orange Walk Town where they saw Emilio Camara and Carlos Chell suffering from chop wounds. Reports are that Chell and Camara were walking on San Victor Street when a dog started barking at them. When Chell threw a stone at the dog, an argument ensued with two passersby: George Perez and Rudy Rodriguez. Perez, who was armed with a garden hoe and Rodriguez, who had a machete, allegedly attacked the other two. Camara suffered a large chop wound to the left side of his face and Chell sustained a head wound. Camara is listed as critical but stable at the K.H.M.H. Chell checked himself out of the Orange Walk Hospital. Both Perez and Rodriquez will be charged with attempted murder and dangerous harm.
