Mexico vs/ Belize boxing action
If basketball on Friday night is not enough for you sports fans, there is also boxing on Sunday. This time Belize will defend the flag against Mexican challengers. For more on the excitement at Bird’s Isle, here’s James Adderley.
The sport of boxing has been steadily gaining momentum in Belize and Sunday brings up another big step. A 7-man team from Mexico will challenge the best Belizean amateur fighters at big Bird’s Isle this Sunday June 20th in an international fight card dubbed Mexico vs/ Belize.
For Horace Cadle, a former bronze medallist and Belize’s favorite boxer in this outing will be the swan song of his amateur career.
Horace Cadle, Boxer
“On Sunday I’m just looking to go out there and knock out my opponent or something like that.”
Q: “How important is this fight for your career? We understand that you’re thinking of going professional after this.
Horace Cadle
“Next month or the next two months I have to go professional because I’m already tired of this amateur thing.”
Q: “Does by making the step up mean that definitely we can’t expect an amateur fighter to take Horace Cadle come Sunday?”
Horace Cadle
“No amateur will beat Horace Cadle because it is my last fight and then I go professional.”
We’re betting Horace Cadle will come through in Sunday’s outing Mexico vs/ Belize. Meanwhile, Moses Sulph the heaviest fighter on this card takes a clear-headed view, he may be humble but inside the ring he is a dangerous contender.
Moses Sulph, Boxer
“I have been an amateur for about 3 years but I have a good coach who coaches well and always encourages me and encourages all of us. We train a lot; we train hard and he teaches us all the defenses and offensives we need. I think we have the proper tools to get the job done.”
Q: “What weight will you be fighting at?”
Moses Sulph
“I will be fighting at 165-160 pounds. What I expect is since I have trained I will give out my best as my coach taught me and I expect to do alright. I expect with God’s help to win.”
Q: Are you a defensive fighter? What kind of fighter are you?”
Moses Sulph
“We learn both defense and offense; there’s a time when you have to do offense and there’s a time when you have to do defense. The coach teaches us when to offense and when to defense.”
Boxing trainer Leopold Smart says his team is ready for the world.
Leopold Smart, Trainer
“I think they can do very good against the Mexicans although we know that the Mexicans are very, very tough. But these guys are seasoned amateurs because they went to Venezuela, Guatemala and Honduras and all had gold, silver and bronze medals.”
Q: “When do you think Horace Cadle will be ready to go professional?”
Leopold Smart
“After this fight I will look at the progress that he made since he fought the last fight. I think Horace can fight a 4 round starting off.”
Now we’d like you to meet Sherwin Garcia, a founding member of Belize Building Blocks Association which is promoting this fight.
Sherwin Garcia, Belize Building Blocks
“The last time we had a fight it was sort of an exhibition but this one now is for real because we went to Chetumal and we invited the Mexicans. We have Carlos Ramirez, Alan Novelo, Jimmy Can, Manuel Gonzalez, Miguel Garcia, Julio Zamil and Guero Espadas. For the Belize card we have Horace Cadle, Joseph Eagan, Moses Sulph, Michael Soberanis, Arlington Pandy and Stuart de Leon.
We learned from our mistakes and the last time we recognized that we had a little run-in about reserved seats. But this time we have prepared ourselves to get the seating process properly in order, to have the ring in a proper setting. We’re even getting a different ring this time so that we are sure that the seating facilities for the reserve and other areas will be in adequate positions this time.”
It’s Belize against Mexico and it’s time for you to rally around the flag, Belize. Reporting for News Five, I’m James Adderley.
Tickets will be on sale at the gate. The boxing action begins at 11 Sunday morning.
