Child murdered in Orange Walk
A missing ten year old girl was found dead in the Stadium Area of Orange Walk Town this afternoon. Although she disappeared yesterday, her mother did not make any report to police until this morning. Police say Melina Cruz, told them her ten year old daughter Karen returned home from a party around five p.m. on Sunday, but at seven p.m. when her sisters came home they found one of her friends watching TV but couldn’t find Karen anywhere in the house. They searched the area last night and again today. The body was found this afternoon by relatives.
Insp. James Magdaleno, Orange Walk police
“It was not until about 12:45 today the 14th when a report was received that the dead body of Karen was found in the nearby bushes behind the Technical High School in this municipality. She was at the time wearing a pink dress that she had gone to the party with. Her underwear was around the left leg and not where it was supposed to be.
All indications at this time show that she was raped. Foul play is suspected and we’re investigating. We have no suspects at this time. The body is at the Orange Walk Hospital morgue where it awaits a postmortem.
The mother was saying that Karen could have left the house unknown to her because where she was standing was at the front door of the house speaking to a neighbor and Karen could have slipped through the back door.”
It is believed that the child was strangled although this has yet to be confirmed. Police questioned the mother today and say they are questioning two people at this time, but so far no arrests have been made.
