Ticketing Quota for Belize City is at 100 per Month

Bernard Wagner

Earlier this month, we told you about a ticketing quota for traffic wardens   disclosed in a memo sent to all Senior Transport Officers attached to the Department of Transport.  The circular said a minimum of forty-four traffic violation tickets by each officer every month.  Those who failed to comply would be sanctioned for insubordination.  Today, while we were with Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner, he was asked if there is a similar quota for traffic officers at City Hall.  As it turns out, they do have one and it’s for one hundred traffic violations per month. Here’s how Mayor Wagner explains it.

Bernard Wagner, Belize City Mayor

“Quotas have been with us from way back. We didn’t change any quotas when we came into office. We found a quota system that requires that traffic officers give five tickets per day. So if you work out for a twenty-day, it’s a hundred per month. That’s the quota that we met. We have not changed it; we remained with it. To say that we sanction our officers if they don’t make it, no. It is a fluid situation and you work along with it. But you also expect some sort of performance management that you require your officers and your people in any organization to perform. I am certain that you guys have to do some amount of stories per day. Isn’t that so? So it’s the same. It is not a revenue-driven activity. It is more about blending performance along with compliance of the laws in the city.”
