Story Picture
Three up and coming musicians will be leaving the country to attend the Interlochen Arts Camp. The camp, which has been named one of the top 25 in the United States by Family Life Magazine, attracts two thousand students from thirty countries every year. Natasha Young, will study classical violin and piano, Leah Flowers will specialize in cello techniques while Herschel Armstrong will pursue classical and jazz piano. According to Armstrong, the opportunity to spend eight weeks this summer learning and playing music is a dream come true. Arreini Palacio reports.

Herschel Armstrong, Student

“For me it is a great honor, this is the first time I applied for the camp and being accepted I am really excited and I feel it is an opportunity of a lifetime actually going to the camp.”

“Music has always been an integral part of my life. I have been playing the piano since I was about 7 years old, and it is one of my best hobbies so I don’t really mind going to camp just to play the piano for eight weeks. But I would like to encourage other children in Belize to get involved in playing an instrument, get involved in music because it helps to develop you as a person as a child as well.”

Hershel also plays the guitar, string bass and the steel pan. The three musicians, who leave on June twenty-six will give a concert at the Bliss Institute on Saturday June 12 at 7:30pm. And don’t forget that this Saturday the Fiddlers on the Reef are holding their Museum of Belize benefit concert at the House of Culture.
