Belize gets MRSP headquarters
Belize’s reef is already a World Heritage site and now Belize will be the international headquarters for the Meso-American Reef System project (MRSP). Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources Johnny Briceno, who attended an environmental conference in Guatemala last week says Belize lobbied hard to get the headquarters for the MRSP which is being financed by the World Bank to the tune of ten million US dollars. The MRSP members are Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, but Belize has the longest section of the reef to safeguard and the only functioning barrier reef committee. Fisheries Administrator George Myvett says the headquarters will have economic benefits with financing assured for state of the art research, education of tour guides, fishermen and the public. The headquarters will also attract international conferences on marine biology and reef system bio-diversity.
