Collision on Northern Highway leaves one dead
In the last twelve months four fatal collisions and several minor accidents have taken place between the entrance of Bella Vista and the Pallotti junction on the Northern Highway. For some time Residents living along this stretch of highway have been complaining saying the road is poorly lit, there is a need for speed bumps and median lines. Today, it is not clear if poor infrastructure or driver error is to blame for yet another fatal traffic accident Friday night at mile three and a half on the highway. According to reports around seven forty five, thirty five year old Peter Gianchandani was traveling in a pickup towards Belize City and tried to overtake a car at the entrance of Bella Vista. Coming in the opposite direction at the same time on a motorcycle were forty-four year old Thomas Sanchez and Jose Sanchez of Ladyville. At this time it is not known if Gianchandani saw the brothers who were heading home but as he passed the car he hit the motorcycle. The brothers were thrown from the cycle and Thomas who died on the spot. Jose remains in the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Gianchandani has been charged with causing death by careless conduct, manslaughter by negligence, driving without due care and attention and negligent grievous harm.
