Faber Faces Two Charges
While an informal report was made to police on Monday, the events that unfolded two days later which resulted in Dr. Arnold’s injury, as well as the destruction of her laptop, has led to charges being brought against the Leader of the Opposition. Faber is facing charges of assault and damage to property. According to ComPol Williams, there was a report made on Monday, but that was for future reference only. Wednesday’s statement included both incidents.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police, Belize Police Department
“I think that there was an incident that took place on Monday and an unofficial report was made and at that particular juncture, the complainant had requested that she didn’t want anything, just for future reference. And when she gave her official report yesterday, she also encapsulated what took place on Monday so her report yesterday was in respect to what took place yesterday and what took place on Monday. There is an allegation that a hammer was used and she claimed that Mr. Faber had hit her on her hands with a hammer, causing her pain and yes, she did use his vehicle to go to the station to make a report and I guess that was the best available vehicle for her to have been able to escape and go to the police station. Yes, he will be facing charges for damage to property in respect to the laptop as well. We are not going to do anything to embarrass the Leader of the Opposition. We are going treat him with the level of courtesy that we can afford to him. I know for a fact that the charges have been prepared and they are just waiting for him to go in and once he goes in he will be served with the charges and he goes straight to court. It’s a matter for the court to decide whether or not they are going to grant him bail, but we are not going to do anything to try and embarrass him further than what is already taking place. So that is how the matter is going to be dealt with.”
