Comptroller of Customs targeted with grenade

Story PictureIn Belize City’s deadly and dangerous streets, a third grenade exploded on Tuesday night. This time, the target was the Comptroller of Customs’ residence on Signa Yorke Street in the Belama Phase One area. The Comptroller, fifty-two year old Gregory Gibson told police that he was inside his home with his wife and sixteen year old daughter when he heard an explosion on the third floor of their home. When he went to check what it was, Gibson noticed a hole about one foot in diameter on the wall outside. Police investigations reveal that the device was apparently thrown onto the third floor from an empty lot at the back of the building. B.D.F. bomb expert, Major David Jones found the grenade’s fly-off lever on a tree in the open lot. It is not certain who would want to harm the Comptroller of Customs but he has reportedly received threats before. His department has been in the headlines many times over the past year after Customs’ investigations into several contraband importations, a shipment of illegal guns and the medicines containing the illicit chemical, pseudoephedrine.
