P.S.U. Women Condemn Allegations of Domestic Violence by the Leader of the Opposition
The Women’s Committee of the Public Service Union has issued a strongly worded condemnation of the act of violence allegedly perpetrated by the Leader of the Opposition. The P.S.U. Committee says he did the right thing announcing his intended resignation, and they expect him to carry through with this commitment. The Public Service Union reminds the community that while it is one of the most pervasive violations of human rights in the world, domestic violence is one of the least prosecuted crimes. They also call out the hypocrisy of only taking note of such cases when they involve public figures, as daily women and young girls are abused by ordinary citizens and other professionals. The P.S.U. is also asking the Commissioner of Police to include reports of this type of crime in his weekly address to the media and remind Belize that only a few weeks ago the country was observing Sixteen Days of Activism against gender-based violence. Finally, they appeal to all perpetrators to end the violence and encourage all persons who are victims to reach out to the relevant authorities for assistance.
