…But voter turnout was only 52 percent
…And now to the topic of voter turnout. Early on and throughout the day there were concerns in several municipalities that the votes cast would be lower than the fifty to sixty percent national average … and it almost would have been were it not for highs in Orange Walk and Benque. The overall turnout for the country was fifty-two percent according to Elections and Boundaries statistics. Belize City had an average of forty-four percent with seventeen thousand and eighty-seven ballots cast. The last time that average was recorded was in 1996. Moving into the districts, Belmopan had thirty-three percent, San Pedro boasted sixty-one percent, Corozal came in at sixty-four percent, Orange Walk led the pack with sixty-seven percent, San Ignacio and Santa Elena dipped well below the national average with twenty-three percent, Benque Viejo had an impressive showing with sixty-six percent, Dangriga recorded fifty-one percent, while Punta Gorda rounds out the list with a fair fifty-nine percent.
