Marin: Ostriches Can Be Revenue Earner
We asked the reason for her interest in the ostrich, which is not a bird Belizeans are very familiar with. She explained that these birds can be income generators for those in the agro-industry sector.
Nancy Marin, Businesswoman
“I have volunteered at ostrich farms in California. I visited and worked at some in New Mexico, in Mexico itself, in Monterrey, in Merida they have ostrich farms and I’ve always been involved. So I know the breeding of the animal; I know how to process the meat; I know how to remove (the skin) for leather; I know how to do all of this. The ostrich is a very versatile animal. You can use every single part of it. You can use the meat in various different ways; you can use the leather, the feathers, the bones, even oil from the fat of the ostrich is a high-priced commodity. The hooves are dried and sold as ornaments. Every single part of the ostrich can be used for something and every single part is very high-priced, so it’s very profitable.”
