18 Year Old Recently Out of Youth Hostel Killed; Motive Unknown

The violence continued this morning in the Antelope Street Extension area of Belize City when a young man was shot dead in the street. His murder has left a friend numb and the police searching for clues. News Five’s Marion Ali was the story:

Eighteen year-old Joshua Pou had reportedly been staying with a friend on Hercilett Moody Street in the Antelope Street Extension area and never had a problem with the residents; but this morning someone obviously wanted him dead and succeeded in their plan to kill him.

“Sometime around eight-thirty, shots rang out on this very street that we’re standing and when the shooting ceased, he was lying behind that blue vehicle to my left, lifeless, noh.”
A friend of the deceased told us that he had been staying at her house since his release from the Youth Hostel a couple of months ago.

“Ih come da back and ih seh that ih family chase ah and ih never had nowhere fi goh soh that’s why ih end up back ya. But since ih di hend da back ya, he come everyday, he sleep da my place, we cook, he eat. He eat big, he love eat. That da the thing bout he, he love eat.”
The Belize Police Department’s Communications Director, Assistant Superintendent, Fitzroy Yearwood said at the scene the deceased had been in a conversation at the junction with someone only moments before he was gunned down; the motive – unclear, but the intent, evident.

“From the amount of wounds on that body, I wouldn’t see who else would have been the target. He was recently charged for an aggravated burglary and he had been a resident at the Youth Hostel. But he did not act in any violent way towards anybody in this area, so it’s a really difficult investigation but we at the Police Department believe that we can get some form of information that could at least establish who would want to do something like this to him.”
Whoever is responsible for Pou’s killing took away someone’s good friend.

“Fi we last conversation was yesterday evening right by da red vehicle over deh. He come and he hug up me and he seh “Sis, you done know, yoh know, once anything I deh right round the lane yoh know.” Soh I tell ah, “Yah breds, yah breds.” And ih seh “okay later ah wa come see yoh,” but I never did get fi see he none at all and up to this morning I still nuh see ah.”
Police have recovered several nine millimeter expended shells, and two slugs from the scene. Marion Ali reporting for News Five.
