Semi-pro basketball may be kicking up dust at the City Centre, but the action on the court is not the only thing on the mind of the Belize National Basketball Association. Today marked the opening of a rules clinic for referees, coaches and their players sponsored by the B.N.B.A. and the Belize Olympic Committee. According to B.N.B.A.’s President, John Saldivar the workshop includes presentations on the future rule changes.

John Saldivar, President, B.N.B.A.

“It has the participation of one of the technical commissioners from FIBA, which is the International Basketball Federation: Mr. Fred Horgan. He is the representative on the Technical Commission from Canada. He will be with us for the next two weeks to impart with us his knowledge of the game and the rules of the game. As part of the Technical Commission he is one the those who helps to write the rules of basketball.”

Q: “How will this improve basketball in Belize?”

John Saldivar

“The first thing we need to note is that every two years the rules of basketball change and we need to keep updated with the rules. Mr. Horgan is here to update our referees, coaches and our players on the new rules changes. There is also a rules change slated for next year so he will give us a look at what those rules should look like for next year.”

The rules clinic takes place at the Royal Orchid Conference Room and ends on May 29th.
