James Adderley has weekend sports
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re just in time for a fresh flavor of Sports Monday. We take you out to the Roger’s Stadium here in Belize City for a pair of softball matches as we join the female opener with C.T.C. batting against J.L.’s.
It’s Delvorine Mena on the mound for J.L.’s when she gets tagged by Desiree Flowers for a long sail. The next batter for C.T.C., Karen Allen – the second baseman, bangs a double that brings home 2 runs thanks to a fielding error by Audrey Rudon. Shelmadine Davis then comes up with a single through the middle as Allen scores.
Greta Davis keeps the inning going with a hit right at second base to bring home another run. Mena then hits Sherette Jones with a pitch putting her on base. Pitcher Janelle Smith helps her own cause with a run scoring double that also sees Jones score all the way from first. When Dorilla Young pops up to the infield, it is misplayed big time for another run to score. It’s an eight run seventh as C.T.C. and Janelle Smith get the 15-6 big “W” – this after mashing J.L.’s in game I, 15-zip.
Turning to the male softball scene, we join the first inning between Rookies and G.A. Roe and Sons as Nelbert Flowers doubles home a run for Rookies. The very next batter Dennis Ebanks tags Pat Henry for a screaming homerun that puts up 2 runs on the scoreboard. Derek Jones then strikes for his homerun of the inning. Pat Henry would go the distance but in a blow out as Rookies romp, 17-2 over G.A. Roe and Sons.
In basketball news, our National Team returned from Costa Rica today after winning 1 of 5 to finish seventh in the COPA Basket. Our only win came against Costa Rica in a 63-61 decision over the weekend and Channel 5’s Hyacinth Latchman met then at the airport.
Bart Sanchez
“I think preparation was one of the major aspects that we didn’t have. With every game that we played we got better but the teams were better than us. They practiced for months; like Cuba, all they do is practice, practice, practice.”
Milton Palacio
“It was the practice and the time. I just think that it was a disappointing tournament for ourselves. I feel that if you’re basketball players you gotta go out there and put out a hundred and ten percent. I don’t think we put out a hundred and ten percent.
Dwight Myvette
“It was a disappointment for me as well as everybody else but those things happen. I don’t want to go over the same things that the other players have said already but it was definitely a disappointment.”
Finally in volleyball news, here are the results of Saturday’s schedule at the City Centre. A.M.S. Lady Jaguars rallied past Dangriga’s I.Z.E. 26-24, 25-14, 25-20. Lady Scorpions stung Tabony Toucan 18-25, 28-26, 16-25, 25-22, 15-07. Barclays Eagles flew past Continental Flyers 25-17, 16-25, 15-12. BH Paints Stars did it to Dangriga’s I.Z.E. 25-14, 25-16, 25-23 and AMS knocked off Dangriga’s Scotia Bank 25-17, 25-20, 22-25, 25-18.
That’s it. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
