Virtual Tribute to Honor Musician Edwin Sho
A virtual musical tribute is being held in honor of the life of musician Edwin Sho. He dedicated most of his adult life to preserving the Maya language through Punta and Bruk Down music, up until his untimely passing earlier this week in a work site accident. To honor his legacy, the Maya Culture Belize group will be bringing together a number of artists to perform. This event will be live streamed on their Facebook page. The tribute will also include a fundraising drive to support Edwin Sho’s wife and unborn child. Earlier this week we spoke to Alex Oh, Sho’s musical partner, about his intentions to continue building upon Sho’s legacy.
Alex Oh, Owner, Ak’a’wada Studio
“He showed interest from he was a very small young boy. At the age of twelve or ten he approached me and said he wanted to learn keyboard. And, I got to admit the man is better than me now. Like they say, the student becomes better than the teacher. Growing up his love for music was always keyboard, and he was always bringing out lyrics out of his head. He said one day he would do music. My love for music, I always love music, so I started a studio which me and he started together. The name of the studio, when it start, it was SMG studio. After a while, we changed it and we said since we are doing Maya we should change it to Maya. So, we changed it to Ak’a’wada Studio. Ak’a’wada in Maya means, “yo done seh it”. So it is a phrase that we love to use. So it is Ak’a’wada. From there we started the studio together, and that is a big loss for the studio. Losing Mr. Edwin Sho is a big loss and I want to continue his legacy. He would be proud to continue what he started.”
