S.C.A. and Holy Redeemer hold open days
With the end of the school year just around the corner, students at the nation’s secondary and primary schools are anxious for vacation, but also proud to be completing another year. To boost their confidence and give them some positive reinforcement many schools showcase their achievements at an annual open day. Today it was S.C.A. and Holy Redeemer’s turn to turn the heads of family and friends. News Five was there.
Who said you can’t learn and have fun at the same time? Well the students of St. Catherine’s Academy did not seem to be put off by
the intense heat of the day as they brought out their displays and showcased their talent and school work to their peers, parents and invited guests. The event replaces S.C.A.’s annual Science fair and as explained by the principal of the all girl high school, it encompasses everything that the school has to offer.
Alice Castillo, Principal, S.C.A.
“To show what we do here. We are a school that works very hard; we work our girls very hard and I think that sometimes we are not enough in the public eye. Only when something goes wrong but there is a lot of good going on here and I think it is a very good opportunity for the community to come and see what our girls are capable of doing.”
The students came up with some very interesting and innovative games that kept them and visitors entertained. Even those boys and girls who did not seem to care much for Math actually had a good time solving problems. Or maybe they were just anxious to take part in the banana pie toss if their answer was correct.

“I am extremely impressed. A lot of the exhibits are interactive, which means you can go and you can learn, you can try to see if you can get the correct answer or not. It is extremely interesting and I am very impressed.”
Nelson Longsworth, Vice Principal, S.C.A.
“We structure it such that each department takes care of their own presentation. That is why you see it out in this format. We have the Math in one section and the Science to one side. Wherever your interest lies, you can just go there and have a good time.”
But it was not only high school students who were out of the classroom today. Holy Redeemer Parish Hall was the venue for that school’s middle division open day.
Delcy Young, Principal, Holy Redeemer Middle School
“Basically it is to give the children an idea of how important they are in the school setting, to showcase their talents whether it’s through the academics or the arts.”
The students also helped to quench their visitor’s thirst with juices and fruits on this very hot day.
Whether you wanted something on Belizean folklore, creative writing, means of communication, food groups or even the rain forest, the boys and girls of Holy Redeemer Middle School had it all on display.
