Belizean Beach revitalized
With the weather getting hotter, wouldn’t it be great to have a nice, cool spot by the water to take your family on the weekends? Well, your wish may come true in just a few weeks with the Belizean Beach project shaping up nicely. News Five surveyed the scene this morning.
Not many of us may be aware of the ongoing work that has been in progress at mile three and a half on the Western Highway. The site is the old Belizean Beach and its restoration is part of the Southside Renewal Program. The program promises to restore the area and make it once again a popular recreational site for Belizeans and visitors.

“As you have noted the last time we were here, you could hardly get into the Belizean Beach because over the years, the road has fallen into disuse. There were huge craters.”
Today, the road has been paved, clearing the entrance to the beach and inmates from the Department of Corrections are cutting down the bushes that have accumulated over the years. Michael McKenzie, the Technical Supervisor of the Ministry of Works is overseeing the project.

“The biggest part has been completed which is the road you see now. What we are planning to do is to landscape the front here and put some sand and keep it with some nice filling so that people can really walk.”
A pier will also be erected for those who would like to venture out to sea but don’t want to get their feet wet. The first phase of the work, which is costing 15 thousand dollars, is expected to be completed by May thirtieth. It will be celebrated by an all day family fair.

“There will be several benches and areas where the users of the beach can sit with their family and listen to their own individual music box. The electric people have already come in and they are in the process of installing electricity and lighting up this place.
In the long-term future, Jackie we are looking at dredging the whole front of this area because it has a lot of good sand. It is good sand that comes up here. It can be brought in so we can have an even better beach in the front part of it.”
Several families living at the beach entrance have offered to assist the committee look after the area.
