S.J.C. teacher denied bail
Thirty year old Carlos Milan, the S.J.C. teacher accused of molesting a seven year old child, was handcuffed and escorted over to Magistrate’s Court this morning. However, there was a fifteen minute delay in getting Milan into the court building as the C.I.B. officers and their prisoners were forced to wait outside because the door was inexplicably locked and there were no security guards around to let them in. Fortunately, all the accused decided to behave themselves and did not take advantage of the moment and make a run for it. Eventually, the officers and prisoners had to make their way back down the steps and enter the building through the front entrance. On the way over, Milan who was confident that he would be granted bail told reporters he would be making a statement following his appearance in court. But once inside courtroom number one, the Science teacher of St. John’s College quickly learned that he would not be getting any special treatment and he would have to go it alone since his attorney, Simeon Sampson was absent from the courtroom. Assistant Superintendent of Police, Patrick Rosado told Chief Magistrate Herbert Lord Milan should not be granted bail because he is a man of means and has parents living in Central America. Rosado said police believe if given the chance, the accused would flee. Milan told the judge that he needs to be released on bail because he is a teacher and his students’ final exams are coming up. He also claimed his business in the Belama Extension area was burglarized on Wednesday night and that he has two children to support. It was to no avail, however, and the Magistrate denied Milan bail and ordered him remanded to Hattieville. He is to reappear to face charges of attempted rape and indecent assault on May twentieth. Milan turned himself in to police Tuesday night after reportedly being caught assaulting a child. A medical examination certified the girl had been molested and she has told police it was not the first time.
The Chief Magistrate commented that there are far too many sexual offenses being committed and that there are days when he has as many as five or six such cases. As if to illustrate his point forty-two year old Paulito Dawson was also charged today with indecent assault and was remanded to Hattieville Prison while Troy Dennison charged with burglary and indecent assault met bail of two thousand dollars.
