Elections and Boundaries Says B.P.M. Case Won’t Affect Redistricting Exercise

Notwithstanding a matter that is presently before the Supreme Court which was filed by the Belize Peace Movement, Tamai says the work of the Elections and Boundaries Department to conduct the redistricting exercise is not affected by the ongoing case.

“The matter with the court, I will tell you that as the chair of the taskforce, our duty and our responsibility have nothing to do with a court case because this is something that has been in the making for several months, if not years. So our main focus right now, like I mentioned, is to get the information that’s required and yes, we already have some of that information. Like you rightly said, it is public information in terms of the number of persons in each electoral division.  Those information we publish on our website on a monthly basis, so we already have information in terms of the number of persons registered in each of the electoral divisions. So yes, we already have that. We already have the maps as well. So the persons from the Ministry of Natural Resources, they already have access to these information, so they are presently putting in those figures to see, because the G.I.S. technology will definitely be used. So presently they are working on those to put in the figures and then we look at everything holistically but at this point I am not able to say what will be the outcome because until we look at all the areas, only then can we make recommendations to say what changes will be made.”
