Electricity Production Down Compared to 2020

Notably, the secondary sector, which includes electricity and water generation, construction, and mining, saw a fall in production for the fourth quarter of 2021. Overall production decreased from a volume valued at ninety million dollars to seventy three million dollars in production. That is a nineteen percent decline. An, S.I.B says it is as a result of a more than fifty percent decrease electricity and water generation.

Christopher Hulse, Statistician II, S.I.B.

“Electricity production, we see that it decreased from a hundred and ten point four thousand megawatt hours in 2020 quarter four, to forty five point six thousand mega watt hours in 2021 quarter four. This fall in production is due to two things, this quarter experienced less rain than the previous quarter in 2020. But, there is also a reason that 2020 is so high. That was a very active hurricane season during November when we had Eta and Iota hitting Nicaragua around that time. So, if you compare 2021 to 2019 and 2018, the difference is not that large. But, 2020 is very abnormal because it had high amount of rainfall, above the norm. That is why it looks so big. But, if you compare the previous quarters of the other years, then it is not that big of a drop off.”

Primary activities saw an increase of three percent in the fourth quarter of 2021.
