Village Council Act to Be Amended Ahead of April Election

John Briceño

Village Council Elections are quickly approaching and will likely be held in April of this year. According to Prime Minister John Briceño, new legislation is being passed to amend the act. He says this is to ensure that there’s no abuse in the voting process and that those who vote are registered to that particular village.

Prime Minister John Briceño

“We are passing a new legislation for village councils. We are amending the Village Council Act and one of the big changes that we are doing is to make sure that you can only vote if you are a registered voter and registered in that village. What had happened under the previous government, because they were in government, they allowed people that do not live in the village to come in and to vote. And so to be able to stop that abuse – because I am sure that our colleagues would have wanted to do the same thing, but it is not right. So to stop that abuse, we are changing that amendment to ensure that you can only vote if you are registered in that village.”
