PM Briceño Doesn’t Expect A.S.R./B.S.I. to Pursue Legal Action against G.O.B.
Amid the deadlock between the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association and A.S.R./B.S.I., the Government of Belize gave assurances that there would be legal exemption from penalties or liabilities. Notwithstanding the indemnity that was promised by the Briceño administration, the miller is now seeking legal action. In speaking with the media on Tuesday, Prime Minister Briceño said he hoped that cooler heads would triumph.
Prime Minister John Briceño
“What I am saying, I do not expect and I hope that better minds prevail at B.S.I. of them not going all the way to, in effect, take the government to court.”

“What they want is for any possible threat of blockade to completely be eliminated and that’s kind of like what the… a weapon that the caneros have had to get things moving.”
John Briceño
“But that will never happen. It will not happen in Belize, they have… factories all over the world, they have them in Mexico and when they have problems the cane farmers blockade the factory. I mean, that’s impossible to happen.”
