Basketball star arrives for Cuba tournament

Story Picture
The tournament is next week and Belize still doesn’t have a head coach for the team it is planning to send to the COPA basketball tournament in Cuba, but the Belizean basketball players being pulled in from abroad are starting to arrive. This morning Dwight Myvett joined the crowd of hopefuls. Myvett, who has been playing basketball since the tender age of twelve, has played professionally in Taiwan, Korea, Brazil, Mexico and Venezuela. Clinton “Pulu” Lightburn tells us more about Myvett and the tournament.

“Dwight Myvett is very good. As a matter of fact he is the best player that has ever played in the Belize semi-pro league. One-time Venus sent for him and he beat the famous Kremandala Raiders single-handed. He played for the University of New Orleans and right now he’s playing professional basketball overseas in Asia.

They are coming in to represent Belize in COPA Basketball in Cuba which is the third largest tournament in the world. There will be eight teams for that competition. The top three teams from that competition will advance to the Pan-American Games. The top four will advance to the pre-Olympic trials.”

Lightburn says that tomorrow seven foot tall Leon Watson will arrive to play with the team going to Cuba. Milton Palacio, the MVP of the CARICOM Games, is scheduled to come in on Friday. A decision on whether or not David Greenwood, who led Belize to victory in the CARICOM Games, will be hired is supposed to be made by Wednesday. In the meantime, the players are going ahead with the help of Kevin Siroki and will be training at the City Centre.
