Wesley students hold mock wedding
There are open days and then there are open days. Today News Five visited Wesley College to sample what the students have been up to. Not only did we find the usual display booths, but the Spanish class displayed its initiative with a unique demonstration.
Whatever the nature of their open day project, the students of Wesley College all learned an important lesson while preparing for today’s event: that good preparation brings success.
Raymond Williams
“This is a representation of the actual plan that we are working on in class. What we have is a floor plan which is the actual positions of the rooms. Here is a structure of the roof plan which is done in different sections. So you build by the stages. In here are the rafters. In here you have the ceiling. These are set at a certain proportion to maximize support in the roof.”
Roderick Matura
“Well I like to do this type of artwork because it lets me explain my feelings more. And I get to play with colors and just show my talent to other people out there.
It’s just a hobby because for me to do this in the future it will not pay in Belize overall and you have a lot of criticism in Belize. But mainly I do it as a hobby.”
One project that really stood out from the rest was a wedding ceremony the Spanish class students put together. The new bride shared her experience.
Esther Williams, Bride
“Well it wasn’t a bad thing to prepare for a bride, but the bad part was that it was in Spanish. You have to pronounce it the way Spanish people do. It was kind of difficult to pronounce the words and especially to learn them by heart.”
Q: “Did the groom actually kiss you?
Esther Williams
“No, he did not. It was a fake kiss, but everybody thought it was for real because of the way we did it.”
A special guest in the audience today was also impressed by the mock wedding.
Cordel Hyde, Minister of Education
“Low and behold I got here just in time for the Spanish wedding. Everybody was excited and I was impressed with the priest. He seemed to have a very good command of the Spanish language. It goes to show what we want our people to push towards: keeping their families tight and also having a good grasp of the Spanish language.”
Hyacinth Latchman for News Five.
Wesley College invited other schools to their open day and the students were very pleased that so many parents made the effort to come out.
