Ten Strong Women in the National Assembly
With Chanona’s pending appointment to the upper house, there are now ten women in the National Assembly. Chanona says her selection was not based on gender, but is a welcome addition to the House in terms of women’s representation in national leadership.
Janelle Chanona, Senator Designate
“Dr. Saunders and I were the two that responded to the call when the community said who will stand and be counted… It worked out that it was two women, but certainly I don’t think any of us expected to be supported just on the virtue of being women. It was that we were asking the community to support the best person that was putting themselves forward so that the community could make a decision there. But I certainly was heartened by the fact that regardless of how the pendulum swung today that the senate would have gained additional female representation.”
