PM Briceño to meet with Social Partners on Increasing Fuel Prices
Prime Minster John Briceño is preparing to meet with social partners on Wednesday to address the rising cost of fuel. Affected by several external factors, including the illegal invasion of Ukraine by Russia, fuel prices have reached an all-time high. Hard on the heels of the pandemic’s harsh financial constraints, Belizeans are feeling the pinch.
Prime Minister John Briceño
“It is a crisis. The price of fuel without taxes, it is already every high. So, what we are doing with the fuel issue, we have some ideas, but I won’t want to disclose them at this time. I prefer to hear from the social partners. So, tomorrow we are having a meeting with the social partners, including the private sector and the productive sector, and we will have the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank to do presentations to point out what historically the price of fuel, the taxes we have been collecting, and as to where we are. In the last shipment of diesel I think we have already taken a cut of about four hundred thousand dollars that we did not pass on to the pump. It is something we have to be doing jointly, private sector and public sector.”
