Roy Bennett to stand trial for murder
In the court blotter, on Wednesday two men were acquitted of the murder of Faron Felix and today, his older brother was committed to stand trial in the Supreme Court for another homicide. Twenty-two year old Roy Felix Bennett is accused in the shooting death of seventeen year old Michelle Cattouse, which occurred on February ninth, 2008. Cattouse was one of two young ladies that died in a massive shooting spree between rival gangs that also left thirteen persons injured. The shootout started at Putt-Putt Bar, where Deandra Zetina was shot and killed. But later that night when Cattouse was walking home from the bar with friends, a vehicle pulled up and opened fire on them at the Bel-China Bridge. She was hit in the chest and died minutes later. Bennett was detained and charged on February eleventh, 2008 with one count of Murder and four counts each of Attempted Murder, Use of Deadly Means of Harm and Dangerous Harm. The Murder charges relate to Cattouse’s death while the other charges are for injuries suffered by her friends, Cyril Jones, Harry Joseph, Tarique Bodden and Delarose Puerto. In his preliminary inquiry this morning, a number of witness statements were read, which provided enough evidence to commit Bennett to stand trial. His case comes up in the January 2010 sitting of the Supreme Court. Bennett was unrepresented for his preliminary inquiry but will be assigned an attorney for his trial if he is still unable to afford one at that time.
