Rain to last through tomorrow

Story Picture
We all like a little rain, but if you are hitting frustration point at still not being able to get your laundry dry after a very wet weekend, you’re not alone. News Five stopped by the Belize Weather Bureau to find out what is causing the unexpected rain and how long it will continue.

Michael Gentle, Forecaster

“The present situation is dominated by a front that has become stationery over the northwest Caribbean, mainly over northern Honduras and southern Belize. It has been receiving support over the upper levels from a sub-tropical jet that is over our region. What we expect is that by tomorrow midday this front should start to dissipate. The jet stream should move out of our region and we should expect a decrease in showery activity after tomorrow midday. We think that we could still get some outbreaks of showers and cloudiness inland this afternoon and along the coastal regions tonight and tomorrow morning. And then we are going to have an improvement tomorrow afternoon.

This is a satellite picture up to one o’clock. This is showing considerable cloudiness over the central and northern portions of the country moving from the northeast. There are some clearing up over the Caribbean.”

Gentle says that when we have weather like this and strong winds come along with it they become very concerned about fishermen at sea.

“The main problem with that would be the winds being a bit strong. By this evening we should have in place a small craft caution or probably a warning because we notice the winds are strong.”

Hyacinth Latchman for News Five.

So you may want to hold off on doing a big load of wash because the MET office says the rain will continue off and on through tomorrow. They also say Belize can expect a lot of rain in late May as we head into the hurricane season which opens June first.
