Happy World Water Day Belize!

Established by the United Nations in 1993, World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the two billion people currently living without access to safe water. A core focus of the day is to inspire action towards Sustainable Development Goal (S.D.G.) six: water and sanitation for all by 2030.This year’s theme is “Groundwater – Making the Invisible, Visible.” Out of sight and under our feet, groundwater is a hidden treasure that enriches our lives. While it is invisible, the impact of is visible in Belize and around the world.

“World Water Day actually started from the U.N. Convention at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1991 and since then it has been a celebration throughout different countries and so everyone is celebrating this water day on March twenty-second. And so, why it is important for Belize or for the world is because water is a resource that is essential for our survival and also for the ecosystem to function.”

“Talk to us about the ecosystem in the context of, for instance, the New River and the issues that that tributary has been facing as a water resource.”

“So we have seen from news from the past that there has been this problem in terms of the New River in Orange Walk District and residents over there have raised the concern that it provides bad odor and also the color change in the river itself and they have observed animal deaths, for example, the crocodile and the fish. For this reason, Belize Audubon Society as a conservation entity we try to do or perform different activities that can help in the protection of not just the flora but also the fauna.”
