What Can Motorists Expect from Parking Meter Project?

Bernard Wagner

So, what does this mean for drivers who leave their vehicles in these areas where parking meters have been installed? A dollar and fifty cents for every half an hour is being charged when a motorist uses these designated parking meter spots in Belize City.

Bernard Wagner, Belize City Mayor

“We had extensive consultation with all the business houses in both areas. And again, we can only control on-street parking. That is what the city municipality is responsible for, on-street parking. We want to regulate on- street parking so that all residents have equal space to that space in the city. And so, we want to regulate it. We can’t control off- street parking which is the private parking facilities. Those businesses obviously have to finds some sort of parking for their staff and for other people that do businesses with them. But, the thing is, we want to regulate on-street parking so that space that we have on the streets are shared equitably by all residents.”

“And people will have to pay, right?”

Bernard Wagner

“Yes. But a small fee, one-fifty per half an hour. But it is rotational so the business community will benefit ‘cause now you have the ability where a person doing business with your entity, can now park for that half an hour of that 15 minutes that they’re going into your area to do business and it’s a rotational module. So I really see no draw back on this.”
