CET Introduces Cosmetology Program in San Ignacio

If you love doing make-up, on yourself and on others, or hope to pursue a career in cosmetology, the Center for Employment Training in San Ignacio has the program for you. CET is teaming up with Revolution Artistry’s Marianne Foreman, to provide certification for make-up artists. While it is being piloted in San Ignacio, there is potential for expansion to other districts. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

“I’ve been doing makeup for ten long years. Before I started makeup I was teaching, so I had a passion for teaching. So my journey started off saying that there is a bigger picture to just makeup on people; why don’t I teach it. And so I started my journey back in 2018 as I was once a self-taught makeup artist and then I moved on to learning. My first certification was from the United Kingdom P. Louise Makeup Academy where I did my beginners course. I did my intermediate; I did my advance. After that, I went over to the U.S. and that is where it went big. I got accepted to a prestigious school.”

Foreman has put together a curriculum around makeup techniques, which will now be offered at CET San Ignacio.  The birth of a cosmetology program is a dream realised for the institution.

“It has been a dream of not only the administration, but it comes from the Board of Governors. They’ve been for the past two years wanting to launch something, at least to kick-start something when it comes to cosmetology. So we were blessed to have Miss Foreman join us and the Board is extremely happy. They are looking forward to a successful program.”

“Makeup is not just putting on makeup on somebody, but when you are going to do an interview and it goes for male and female. So this is why when I came here I did the teaching over again and I did it part-time on my own and it is something that I enjoy doing. The thing is that there is just YouTube and you go and learn what you learn and we mostly follow these Caucasian and at the end of the day, we have ethnicities in Belize – we have Garifuna, we have Creole, we have East Indian. So my plan was set out to do makeup on different ethnicities.”

Many makeup artists today are self-taught and not necessarily certified; they’ve mastered tutorials on the do’s and don’ts of makeup. This new initiative provides an opportunity to them, as well as those who would want to venture into this industry to apply and acquire certification.

“When you hear about makeup, oh my goodness it is expensive. Yes it is, but if you have the right products for humidity and we offer it to our students, that is something else on the table. Also it’s not just makeup, I learnt communication skills – how to talk to our clients.  I learnt photography, I learnt videography and the marketing aspect. There is so much, even psychology, in the area of makeup and people do not look at these things and also how to run your business.

people who already doing makeup are very much welcome to come because you can sharpen up your skills. People who don’t know anything about makeup are welcome to come. People who want to learn about the facial aspect, the skin analysis, stuff like that and problems that we face daily dealing with the humidity here in Belize – all of these things here. Anybody who wants to learn this trade is able to come.”

There is a six-day introduction program set for June for which applications are available. This is ahead of the full-time course that will begin in September.

“We are going to launch it with a six days customised program. This will be given on the weekends. We are planning to start it in June. So it will be six weekends, or depending on the location of the people, we want to think about that as well. But tentatively it will be for Friday evening and Saturdays the whole day; that will be for June.”
