Peyrefitte: U.D.P. Will Have to Develop United Position If Referendum is Called

Early indications are that while the U.D.P. supports the call for a referendum, they are divided on the legalization of marijuana for recreational use.  Leader of the Opposition, Shyne Barrow, in a release earlier today says he will “Vote YES to Marijuana legalization in a referendum.” Barrow supported the bill back in July of 2021 when it was introduced in the National Assembly. So, what role will the opposition play in the event a referendum is called?

Michael Peyrefitte, Chairman, United Democratic Party

“We would come together and decide how we want to proceed. Like I said, we have differing opinions in the party. I think by nature we will have to come up with an agreement as to how, if you are one individual within the party and you support it or you are against it, how you can take your position while being very clear that it is not necessarily the position of the entire party? That is just your position. So, we will have to go about as to how we work that out expressing our different views, in the event that a referendum is called for.”
