Police detain 2 men, no arrests yet
For their part, despite intense pressure to find the killer, two days after the gruesome discovery of Jackie Fern Malic’s body police say they do not yet know for certain who killed the young girl, or why. According to A.I.P. Simeon Alvarez, Head of the Criminal Investigations Branch, they have detained two men for questioning. They refuse to give their names because they are still suspects in the case and have not been arrested. Alvarez says at this point they have only confirmed that both men knew Malic and at various times had been seen in her company. Police also have impounded the vehicles belonging to the detainees and are conducting a number of forensic tests. Reports reaching News Five are that one of the men being questioned is an employee of the Ministry of Health and that Jackie had been seen in his red car. News Five asked Alvarez about this individual and if police believe there is a connection between the murders of Jackie Malic and Sherilee Nicholas, the twelve year old student whose body was also found brutally chopped only four miles away from where Malic’s partially decomposed body was discovered on Wednesday.
A.I.P. Simeon Alvarez, Head of C.I.B.
“He is still a suspect and we are still investigating the scenario. As soon as we are prepared to charge when we have seen the evidence, then we will release his name. So at this time the investigation is still a sensitive one and we wouldn’t want to release this person’s name and at the same time the real criminal could still be out there.”
Q: “How true is it that the police have found blood inside the vehicle of this other person that you all have detained?”
A.I.P. Simeon Alvarez
“Well we are just going through the vehicles today, so at this time we have not processed any of the vehicles that are suspected to have been involved with the taking away of this child. So that information is untrue at this time.
Our investigation will tell us whether it is this same person that was responsible for the death of Jackie. But at this time the investigation is still young and we are going down into it. So maybe by the end of our investigation we can confirm whether it is the same person but at this time we cannot really establish that.
The only similarity I can say at this time with Sherilee and Jackie is that both of them had inflicted wounds, stab wounds and both were found with their faces down and they were found on the Western Highway in a swamp just four miles in difference, mile eight and twelve and again they were taken by a vehicle.”
Alvarez says if no evidence is found by this evening they will have to release both men since according to law an individual cannot be detained for more than seventy-two hours.
