Dangriga students to perform in Belize City

The Ecumenical Drama Club of Dangriga will be performing their first major production this weekend at the Bliss. The group held a dress rehearsal today.

The plays, “Sin” and “Sly Fox” are adaptations of the works of U.S. writers Joseph Keenan and Larry Gelbart. The plays are about avarice and just how far a person would go to get a large quantity of money.

Michael Martinez, Member, Ecumenical Drama Club

“This drama is basically about greed. The play, “Sly Fox” is talking about this old man who wants to gain all this money and by doing that he has his assistant, which I play, help him to con a lot of people. To the end, I wanted him to con him and take away all his money but he trick me instead.”

“Sly Fox,” which is set in San Francisco in the late 1800’s, has seven scenes while “Sin,” which is staged in countries all over the world, has six. They both include a multitude of characters, but this was not intimidating to the students.

Q: “Because you are portraying these multiple characters, was it difficult learning your lines? How long did it take you to prepare?”

Sheldon Martinez, Member, Ecumenical Drama Club

“Well it did not take me long. I learnt it in a week. Yes, but then to really express myself and learn the lines was harder but to learn the line itself it did not take me long.”

The plays, which have already been presented in Dangriga and Belmopan, will be performed at the Bliss Institute to give city residents a taste of what Dangriga has to offer.

Michael Martinez

“We really want to show the rest of the people in the country that we Dangrigan Belizeans are also talented because basically whenever anyone hear of Dangriga coming to perform they have this doubt in their mind. So we are trying to show people that we are also talented.”

The show gets underway at eight p.m. this Friday and Saturday at the Bliss. Tickets are ten dollars at the door, with a special student price of only five dollars.
