Prime Minister denounces brutal killings
The grisly murders of young girls, particularly the cases of Sherilee Nicholas and Jackie Malic have parents all over Belize wondering what they can do to protect their children and how they should explain such inexplicable events. The nation’s leader is also grappling with these issues as well as how the society can put an end to such madness. Prime Minister Said Musa commented on the latest tragedy today in Belmopan.
Said Musa, Prime Minister
“Clearly it is very shocking when anyone dies or is killed but it is even more shocking when a young innocent person is killed in this fashion. It’s a horror. It’s horrifying and it’s even more frightening to think that there might be a very sick criminal out there who is perpetrating these murders and abusive acts and the violation of young people. It’s horrible as a society. We have to think hard about how we are going to fight this thing. It’s like a situation in England with “Jack the Ripper”. This type of crime, the police can do anything possible but you may not be able to break it easily. You are dealing with a lone — possibly, a lone sick mind out there who has launched an operation how to deal with these things. So it really is going to tax us really hard to deal with this problem but we have to deal with it.”
Musa says to bring the issue to the forefront he will be attending the Children’s Summit at St. Mary’s Hall this Saturday. Musa says the time has come to listen to the children themselves because they may be able to shed some light on why these crimes are continuing. He says it may also be necessary to create a special task force to deal with these crimes against children. In related news, the Minister of Human Development, Women and Youth, Dolores Balderamos Garcia is having a press conference Monday morning to discuss family violence, particularly the alarming situation of our children being sexually abused. Garcia will also sign into law the Families and Children Regulations 1999 which will make it mandatory for people to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect to the right authorities. Attorney General Richard Dickie Bradley will be at the conference.
